In the Barn Quilt Show Benefits Shelter
by Barbara Colton
The biannual quilt show put on by the talented quilters of the "Gone to Pieces" quilt group will be held this year on Saturday, September 25th at the barn on Walker Lane. This three-story European-style barn belonging to Nancy and Jeff Flamm has been the venue for five previous quilt shows. Located on the 15-acre, beautifully landscaped original Walker estate in Holladay, this one-day show is a much-anticipated event. The Flamms invite you to stroll around the grounds to enjoy the lake, fountain, trees, flowers and animals. The "Gone to Pieces" quilt group was organized in 1992 as a way to unite women in the neighborhood. Since then, members have disbursed from the original neighborhood, invited mothers, sisters, daughters or friends to join, and live from South Jordan to Holla-day. The 35 members of this quilt group have weekly meetings, which include a pot-luck lunc from which two cookbooks have come. Members of the group have spent the last two years creating lovely, fun and original quilts for our show, the proceeds of which will benefit the Road Home Shelter in Salt Lake City. The funds help provide food and shelter for the homeless, and support training to help families become self-sufficient. This year's beautiful "opportunity" quilt, a pineapple design, paper-pieced by the members of the group, has been quilted by national award-winning machine quilter and group member Renae Haddadin. In addition, more than 130 quilts will be on display. This year's show wll also feature a boutique of hand-made items for sale. This will be your chance to get a head start on Christmas shopping or stock up on gifts items. From pin cushions to hairclips, hand bags to baby blankets, there will be something for everyone. Mark your calendars and be sure to come on September 25th from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM to 2520 Walker Lane (5450 South, going east from Highland Drive), Holladay, 84117. There will be parking on Walker Lane and a shuttle pick-up spot for those not wanting to walk. Admission is $5. Opportunity quilt tickets will be $2 each, or 3 for $5. You do not need to be present to win.
