Silver Thimble Award

The 2009 Silver Thimble Winner by Debbie Robertson

The annual Silver Thimble award is given each year to a member of the Utah Quilt Guild (UQG) who has shown outstanding service in promoting the art of quilting in the State of Utah.  This year’s nominations’ process has brought to the forefront once again, many wonderful quilters who exemplify these attributes.  The UQG is pleased to announce the 2009 winner of this prestigious award is Pamela Morgan.

Pamela’s love, talent and service in promoting the art of quilting extends over a span of 24 years.  She has served in many leadership positions including President of the UQG in 1993.  She served on the state board for a total of 13 years in various capacities.  In addition she has served as a chapter president of the UQG, served on the board of the Holiday Quilt Show and Auction for 12 years, was a committee member of the Greater Salt Lake Area, served on the Deseret Hospital and Quilt Museum board, hosted the Corner Canyon Quilt Group in her home for nine years and hosted the Girlfriends Quilt Group for seven years.  In addition to all of this, she has taught numerous classes, lectures, and presented countless trunk shows throughout Utah and Idaho.

Pamela has the ability to spread enthusiasm and excitement about quilts that could make even the most hesitant of new quilters confident that they too can quilt.  Many women have been inspired, educated and enticed into quilting because of Pamela’s exuberance.

Pamela’s daughter, Alece says she grew up in a home where a quilt was something sacred.  “I remember watching a movie with my mother and her girlfriend about a quilt made by a group of friends, all hand appliquéd blocks and put together for an amazing quilt that a stupid girl wrapped around herself and ran through the fields and dirt.  We were outraged!”   Alece further states, “I will cherish the memories of literally moving in and out of numerous hotel rooms with quilting paraphernalia, racking up the miles to hop to just one more quilt shop, propping our eyes open at a weekend retreat to finish that last block, and of course, the countless times that darn needle jabbed our fingers just  so we could see that last kiss between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett!  I will forever be grateful for the love and treasure that my mother passed to me and countless others.  Quilting has now become one of my biggest pleasures that I can pass on to the next generation.”

In her own words, Pamela stated, “I have enjoyed supporting and promoting quilting for the last 24 years.  I have also tried to financially support the UQG and the Holiday Quilt Show Auction through the years.  The friends I treasure through quilting are the best part of all.  It is because I want to be counted among such amazing women that I volunteer in leadership, hostessing, etc. to rub shoulders with the finest ladies on earth.”

We give a hearty “thank you” to Pamela for her tireless years of service and for making each quilter she has touched better than she found each of them.
