201 Flying into Colors (Part 1 and Part 2) - Helen Godden

Thursday and Friday all day (8:30 - 11:30am and 2:30 - 5:30 pm) - $200

Description: Introducing Helen's technique of Paintchwork....that is, painted not pieced patchwork
working with stunning Metallic & Pearlescent Lumiere by Jacquard, acrylic fabric paints.
Day 1 - Students will chose from 20 designs for your own Flying Into Colours wall hanging
20 x 30”. Helen will demonstrate how to trace & paint the design; how to combine colours
and blend colours to create Paintchwork onto black fabric. Students will be blown away by
the ease of painting with these fabric paints and their stunning results.
Day 2 - With Helen's expert guidance, booklet of Free-Motion designs and lots of
demonstrating, students will enhance their piece with a wide variety of free-motion
quilting styles to complement their work. Students will then paint again, this time into their
free-motion stitching, enhancing and adding so much life and energy into their individual
and unique work.
This class is a lot of fun and very exciting as student's gain confidence in painting and in
free-motion and their work comes to life in full colour!

Requirements
Black cotton (don’t prewash), any batting and backing; 50cm x 70cm (1/2 yd by WOF) of each.
Or if you bring 1m (1 yard) of black cotton, you can use half for the top and the other
half as backing. If you prefer, the backing can be a bold plain homespun colour
such as purple, red or orange or something fun, as students will be encouraged to
use black bobbin with black thread on top so the design is "drawn" on the back too.

Black basic cotton or poly cotton thread – a brand that you know works well on your machine.
Panda Pencil * to trace onto black fabric.

202 Geese in the Cabin   - Karin Crawford

Thursday Aug 22, 2024  8:30 - 11:30 and 2:30 - 5:30 (all day class) - $60

Description:
This is a very fun quilt to make. The blocks are put together in 6 different choices. The blocks are very precise as a special ruler from Creative Grids is used each step of the way. The finished quilt is 72 x 72 inches. This quilt was made at a retreat in Hamilton, Missouri and the entire group enjoyed making it. The pattern is from Cut Loose Press. The ruler is called 10" Log Cabin Trim Tool Duo. Both are needed for this class. Choose fabric that contrasts with the background fabric. Choose a very contrasting fabric for the geese ( such as black or a dark maroon or green or whatever color goes with your accent fabric which will be the border.) Please come with your fabric starched and cut. Otherwise, it would take you most of the morning just cutting your strips. We will want to get sewing right away.

Class Type: Project
Class Category: Quilting, Machine
Class Difficulty: All Levels

Machine required for this class?: Yes
Pattern Required?: Yes
Pattern fee: $7.00

Kit required?: No

Supply List:

  •          Sewing machine, new needle, oiled,
  •          sewing machine manual
  •          BSK
  •          Background fabric: 2 ¾ yards
  •          Geese and center squares:  1 ½ yards
  •          Border (Focus Fabric) : 1 3/8 Yards
  •          Binding: ¾ yards
  •          Fabric #1- ½ yard
  •          Fabric #2- 2/3 yard
  •          Fabric #3- 7/8 Yard
  •          Fabric #4 - 1 yard
  •          Please come with your fabric starched and already cut. I starch my fabric by submerging it in a water bath of 50% water and 50% Stay Flo Liquid Starch. Then I wring out the liquid and air dry the fabric. Then I iron with as steam iron. This procedure helps so much because you are shrinking the fabric, looking for color that might run, and the starched fabric will be ready to cut precisely, and it will not distort. Also, please cut the geese in 2 1/2 inch squares and then mark on the wrong side with a white chalk pencil a diagonal line. If this is all done beforehand, you will just fly through this class!!

The perfect border can often make the difference between an ordinary quilt and an extraordinary quilt. A border can surround the interior blocks of a quilt bringing them to an abrupt halt or it can gently encourage those blocks to fill out the quilt and finish it. This lecture will teach you how to figure out how to make your pieced borders the correct size to match your quilt top.

Each year, whether through a quilt guild or with the Utah State Fair Quilt Challenge, I love to participate with challenge quilts. I do this so I can challenge myself to learn different quilt techniques with each one I create. It has allowed me to stretch my creativity and create quilts using various techniques that I have learned along the way. In my trunk show I will show several of my challenge quilts and describe which technique I used with each one. It’s my hope that by displaying my quilts it might inspire someone to find the creativity inside of themselves and try things that are new to them.
