This bold six-pointed star fits nicely inside a 12 inch square and appears to float on the background. The large hexagon center is perfect for showcasing a large-scale print and the larger background pieces look great in low volume prints. Assembling the blocks in off-set rows gives the quilt a modern feel. The block also looks great in traditional fabrics, batiks, or geometric prints. It looks very difficult to make, but actually, using Sew Kind of Wonderful Quick Curve Ruler (6 x 10 inch) and the Sew Square 6 Ruler, you will be very happy with the resulting 12 x 12 inch (unfinished) blocks. This quilt is a great way to use up your bright fabric scraps for the flower petals and your solid (or reads as solid, e.g. tone on tone) fat quarters for the background of the blocks. Longarm doodling is a fantastic way to design that negative space while longarm quilting. There are many designs that you can incorporate into a continuous motion while quilting the backgrounds on your quilts. Doodling gives you muscle memory and is very helpful when you draw a blank while that quilt is "staring at you!"

Memory Quilts are something all of us have made or been asked to make. This class will give you many ideas and best practices in printing photos, prepping shirts and other paraphernalia, coordinating fabrics, embellishments, lace, poems, cards, and anything else you need to add for a fabulous memory from button up shirt pillows to full quilts and everything in between. Making Memories the Modern way (Lecture/demo)- This lecture goes over 10 to 15 different ideas on how to preserve those memories. A child?s picture book, t-shirt quilts, photo anniversary quilts, different textiles in quilts and runners, pillows, mouse pads, lace, doilies, embellishments, and more.

Come learn to do hand and machine applique and make this fun orange peel quilt. I will teach you how to prepare your applique pieces and what best to use to put your applique in place. We will also use different threads to see the different looks that the threads give. I will teach both hand and machine applique techniques.

In keeping with the Utah Quilt Guilds motto, to encourage, promote and preserve the art of quilt making, a FREE class just for beginners will be held at this year's Quilt Fest. This is a great opportunity to introduce your friend(s) to the "Wonderful World of Quilting". It's for that friend that always says, "I wish I could do that". A free class for your friend or family. A chance to enjoy each other's company and just have a darn good time. An adult is required for children under 10 to be in attendance. Some very basic information will be shared to help understand the language of quilters, like fat quarter which is not part of your anatomy or a burger at McDonalds. All supplies are provided. We will have tools to try out, handouts, fabric and patterns. A machine is not required but an opportunity to sew on a few machines will be available (we can take turns). Please take advantage of this FREE opportunity.

As you save your orphan blocks to be sewn into a family of beautiful quilts, I hope you'll also think of us if you have batting that may need a new home also. The quilt tops completed at Quilt Fest will need to be quilted which requires batting and backing, a little larger expense than just an orphan block or two. If you have it in your heart, we'd really appreciate batting also. Our largest quilts are often twin size, so twin or lap sizes would be greatly appreciated.

The Fisher House at the SLC VA hospital provides support for America?s military. This ?comfort? home enables family members to be close to loved ones during extended hospitalizations for unexpected illness, disease or injury. In general, family members, caregivers or loved ones of a Veteran or Service member who live 50 miles or more from the Medical Center can stay at the Fisher House for free. The Fisher House is run solely on donations. We will be collecting unfinished 12-1/2? blocks at a table near registration. Then on Thursday evening we will assemble these blocks into large lap size up to large twin size quilts for donation to the military and veteran families in need.
