Class Description: Have you ever wanted to design your own quilt? A medallion quilt can be a wonderful way to begin. After the medallion is designed, the rest of the quilt is finished by adding border after border. In this class you will be taught the technique of Broderie Perse. The flowers you select for your own designed vase will then be appliquéd on wool which will then be the flowers in your original arrangement. You will be taught Broderie Perse, Wool Applique, stems, leaves, and finally hand embroidery embellishment for your flowers. The medallion you have designed and executed can then be the center of a wall hanging or any other finished project, and will be totally your original design. Adding wool and embellishment stitches to your Broderie Perse is a creative process which is fun, original, and eye catching.
Supply List:
Background: Think wallpaper and tablecloth. Choose 2 fabrics, which will look compatible with the fabrics you select for the Broderie Perse. Cut the tablecloth 25 inches by 7 inches. Cut the wallpaper 25 inches by 19 inches. Please sew the two fabrics together and bring to class, ready to start placing the vase, stems, flowers and leaves. When the entire applique is complete, trim to 24 ½ inches by 24 ½ inches. This is the medallion.
Vase: Depending on the style of your Broderie Perse fabrics choose a vase fabric, which is compatible. I used a Blue and White china looking vase. You might consider an ombre fabric, which gives depth and interest or something from a Civil War Reproduction fabric or a Kaffe Fassett fabric. Bring a fat quarter for your vase.
Broderie Perse: Quilter’s quality cotton fabric with large floral prints, which can be fussy cut. If you want bright, think Kaffe Fassett. If you want Civil War reproduction, think large floral prints. If you want a Jen Kingwell look, think any print that can be fussy cut and placed on a bright wool flower.
Wool: Many bright colors to complement your cotton Broderie Perse. Please back all of your wool with Softfuse. Leave the paper on the Softfuse until you are ready to cut the wool.
Stems and Leaves: Select several shades of green (in my case I used blue). Make sure there is enough for the longer stems. Back with Softfuse.
Embellishment: #8 Perle Cotton (Valdani , DMC, Eleganza) in colors to complement your flowers.
Other: Chenille Needles # 24, scissors (paper and embroidery and wool), freezer paper (I recommend CutRite heavy duty freezer paper, thread (wool to MATCH your wool flowers and applique thread to MATCH your Broderie Perse), Fons and Porter glue stick, Glue Baste-it, light box for tracing, and small cutting mat.
