Volunteer Opportunities

Quilty Friends, the best part of Quilt Fest is taking classes, meeting new friends, and reconnecting with old friends but the event can't take place without your help.  Please consider spending a little bit of your time serving our Guild.  Help is especially needed at the Quilt Show entrance and other areas.  If you can spare two hours to sit at a station it would be greatly appreciated.  If you only have a few minutes to spare, consider serving as a Teacher's Pet in your class by taking the role and helping your instructor, if needed.

There is a form on the website for you to volunteer. Call, text or email Julie Hardcastle with any questions at (435)760-2534 or  hardcastleranch@gmail.com

Call for Silver Thimble Nominations

The Silver Thimble Award was created to honor recipients for outstanding service and commitment to the Utah Quilt Guild. The award recognizes people who advance the mission of the Utah Quilt Guild to encourage, promote and preserve the art of quilt making.  Think of those who have inspired, taught, and “loved you” into becoming a quilter. Consider someone who has given unselfish service in helping you and others to develop skills at every level of personal quilting achievement.  Since the inception of the award in 1997, each of the honorees has been an excellent example of knowledge and kindness and has gone above and beyond in their desire to help others.  Please take some time and submit the name of a person in the Utah Quilt Guild that you think is worthy of this praise and recognition by all its members and friends.

To nominate someone for this award please see the website for the form and additional information.

600-23 thru 606-23 Retreat Room

This is the place to reserve a table so you can sew to your heart’s content while you visit with old and new friends. You can leave your work in progress while attending a class, lunch, the vendor mall, or going to bed.  All Retreat Room participants must be registered for Quilt Fest.  There will be a limited number of tables that are set up for 2 people.  These tables are “buddy” tables and both people must be registered for Quilt Fest and for the specified table.  Other spots are for individuals either per day or per week.  You must agree to the Retreat Room rules (e.g., no personal irons, etc.) to reserve a space.  Only one person needs to send in a request for all those that desire to sit near each other.  Deadline for these requests is October 1, 2023.  Requests can be submitted on the website. A few days prior to Quilt Fest you will receive an email telling you which table you have been assigned.

Vendor Area

We will have some of our favorite vendors again this year at Quilt Fest.  Vendors will be located in Expo A with the quilts.  Hours will be Wednesday through Friday  10-6, and Saturday 9-2:30

On Friday from 12-2 we will be having drawings for prizes.  To enter, you need to have made purchases. Vendors will provide the tickets – multiple tickets for larger purchases.  Come join the fun and shop our vendors!

Interested in becoming a vendor?  Click here https://www.utahquiltguild.org/quilt-fest-vendors.htm

500-23  Mystery Quilt

To solve a mystery, clues are given along the way.  As each clue is solved, the mystery is revealed.

After signing up for this class, an email is sent to each participant with fabric requirements and cutting instructions.  If prepared prior to Quilt Fest, you can immediately begin sewing after a clue is revealed each day, beginning with Tuesday night.  Each project is as unique as the maker who chose their favorite fabrics.  It's additive, exciting and rewarding when the mystery is revealed at Saturday Lunch.  Remember to bring your $10 pattern fee for Marsha.

501-23  Orphan Block Quilt Night

Please join us for fun, candy and prizes at Orphan Block night on Wednesday.  We have a huge collection of orphan blocks and fabric, much of which is being pre-assembled into kits.  You will be greeted with a large selection of orphan block kits, yardage and individual orphan blocks to pick from.  Work in teams or on your own to come up with fun on-the-fly designs using previously-made, abandoned fabrics.  Donate your quilts to charity, keep them or present them to a loved one when completed.   Don't miss a super fun, exhilarating night of designing and sewing!

502-23 Charity Sewing to support Fisher House

The Fisher House at the SLC VA hospital provides support for America’s military. This “comfort” home enables family members to be close to loved ones during extended hospitalizations for unexpected illness, disease or injury.  In general, family members, caregivers or loved ones of a Veteran or Servicemember who live 50 miles or more from the Medical Center can stay at the Fisher House for free. The Fisher House is run solely on donations.

We will be collecting unfinished 12-1/2” blocks at a table near registration.  Then on Thursday evening we will assemble these blocks into large lap size up to large twin size quilts for donation to the military and veteran families in need.

680-23 Swap Meet

Do you or your guild need to earn some extra cash? Here is an opportunity to do that. A limited number of spaces will be available for $25 each. Bring your, displays and new or used (in good condition) non-food items to sell. Your area needs to be manned by a current UQG member.  You will collect your own cash. To reserve a spot or for more information contact Davidene Zimmerman at 801-368-3910.

Mini Quilts

We love to see the beautiful mini quilts everyone creates for Quilt Festival.  Please contribute a small quilt for this excellent cause.  Mini Quilts need to be 20” per each side or smaller for our Mini Quilt fundraiser at Quilt Festival.  If you would like to turn in your mini quilt early, please contact Barbara Walsh. Questions? Text: Barbara at 801-592-2715.  At Quilt Fest, just choose mini quilts that you like, buy tickets for $1.00 per ticket or 6 for $5.00, and then place the tickets in the corresponding envelopes.  Winning tickets will be drawn on FRIDAY evening at the After Party from each envelope and a lucky person will take that mini quilt home.   Note: These quilts do not need to be pre-registered on the website to be displayed at Quilt Fest.

Quilt Fest Baskets & Auction

One of the favorite "things to do" at the annual Utah Quilt Fest is to look at the Art Auction Basket display and decide which baskets you want to bid on, hoping you'll win at least one of them!  Baskets are put together and donated by individuals and quilt guilds and each contain a myriad of quilting treasures including fabric, notions, patterns and treats which range from chocolate to concert tickets.  Last year the basket voted 'most popular' by attendees included a real violin! So please be sure to check out this year's wonderful Art Basket treasures and make bids on the ones you would love to take home!

A primary fund raiser for the Utah Quilt Guild is our annual Art Basket Silent Auction.  This fund raiser covers most of the costs associated with our quilt show!

Here are the basic guidelines: Donations can be quilting related items, fabrics, notions, household items…perhaps even a quilt! They should be in excellent condition and free of pet hair, dander, perfume, etc.  The baskets should contain anything you would enjoy receiving if you “won” the basket.  “Star” themed baskets are sure to be a success this year.

To aid in the display, items need to be in some type of container, such as a tin, a box, a basket, etc. Submissions need to be wrapped in clear cellophane. Embellishments such as bows are good, but please attach a list of the contents along with an approximate value and who is providing the donation, which could be either a group or an individual.  Quilts do not need to be wrapped.

Special Meal Requests

Special meals such as vegetarian, gluten free, and diabetic are available upon request. These requests must be made before October 1st.

Seating Requests

We will again have assigned tables for lunches, so if you have friends you want to sit with, make sure everyone has a purchased a lunch ticket and then go to the website and make the request to sit together.  Seating will be at tables of 8.  If you just want to meet new people every day, don’t request to sit with anyone specific and we’ll move you around to different groups every day.  Seating requests are due by October 1st.  We’ll send out seating assignments prior to Quilt Fest.  In addition, signs will be posted outside of the dining area with your table assignments.

And WRITE your name on your meal ticket to be eligible for prizes or if you drop it, we can return it to you.

Quilt Show – Call for Quilts

Competition and Display Quilts

We will have six levels within the adult competitions for the categories:  Solo Artists and Joint Artists for Novice, Hobbyist and Champion.  (More chances to win a ribbon!!)  We also have a Group category – made by 3 or more people (counting the quilter); and a category for Youth Quilts.  Final categories will be announced by the end of June.

Keep working on your beautiful quilts and enter them into the Quilt Fest Quilt Show! The first 100 quilters submitting for the quilt show or challenge will receive a gift.  See the web site for rules and additional information, including the entry form.

Information will also be in the Beeline in July and August. Registration will be a little different this year, after fixing a glitch encountered last year.  You will still need to email or text copies of pictures of your quilt, so have those ready when you go to register your quilt.  Note:  “Viewers’ Choice” voting will close on Friday evening.

See the website for additional information about entering quilts for the quilt show.

Star Panel Challenge

All 50 of the Challenge panels were purchased quickly – so there is lots of creativity underway.  It will be interesting to see what everyone has done with their challenge panels.  Don’t forget to register and submit your quilt so it can be part of a challenge!  The quilts will be on display during Quilt Fest, and “Viewers’ Choice” awards will be presented on Saturday during lunch.  The quilts may be any size, but must have a minimum perimeter of 40 inches, which is a 10” x 10” quilt.  These quilts will be collected like the quilts for the competition.  “Viewers’ Choice” voting will close on Friday evening.

Block of the Month Challenge

Did you sign up for the Block of the Month?  Did you complete something from the pattern?  Share a picture of a completed item and you can be entered into the drawing for the prizes – and receive $5 back just for joining in the fun.  Make sure to register your quilt on the website and send a picture (follow the directions on the website).  Willing to share your creation with us at Quilt Fest?  Then fill out that portion of the form as well.

Quilt Show will be open Wednesday – Friday 10 am – 5 pm and Saturday 10am -2:30 pm.
