Big Changes for the Quilt Fest Quilt Shows
Sew Many Stars Quilt Challenge
This year’s challenge requires the purchase of a fabric panel for $15 which includes the entry fee. There is a limit of 50 panels. The quilts will be on display during Quilt Fest, and “Viewers’ Choice” awards will be presented on Saturday during lunch. The quilts may be any size, but must have a minimum perimeter of 40 inches, which is a 10” x 10” quilt. These quilts will be collected like the quits for the judged competition (see below). “Viewers’ Choice” voting will close on Friday evening.

Utah Quilt Guild Quilt Show Rules – 2023 Sew Many Stars
A quilt is defined as having three distinct layers – a top, middle and backing. Quilting stitches must penetrate all three layers and be visible on the back. Quilt edge must be finished with some sort of binding or facing. Art quilts may contain some areas with fewer layers of materials. Quilts perimeters must be between 40" (10"x10") and 480"(120"x120"). This year there are six classes for the adult portion of the competition. There are no separate categories for pieced, modern, applique, etc. All quilts in a class will be judged against the other quilts in that class.
Novice (Solo Artist) – Someone who has finished 6 or fewer quilts or has been quilting for less than 3 years. This person has not won a Best of Category, 1st or 2nd place ribbon in previous quilting competitions, such as Quilt Fest, Springville, or nationally recognized shows (QuiltCon, Road to California, etc), or a Sweepstakes award in a State Fair. The quilt was entirely prepared by the single artist.
Novice (Joint Artist) – Someone who has finished 6 or fewer quilts or has been quilting for less than 3 years. This person has not won a Best of Category, 1st or 2nd place ribbon in previous quilting competitions, such as Quilt Fest, Springville, or nationally recognized shows (such as QuiltCon, Road to California, etc), or a Sweepstakes award in a State Fair. The top is prepared by the submitting artist and there was assistance in either the making of the top, or in the quilting of the quilt. Quilt top maker(s) may have significant input into how the top is quilted. A maximum of 2 people participated in the creation of the quilt.
Hobbyist (Solo Artist) – Someone who pursues quilting as a hobby. The Hobbyist may have won up to 3 ribbons, not counting a Best of Show. If the artist has won a best of show, you are considered part of the Champion Class. This top is prepared by the submitting artist and was quilted by the top maker. The quilt was entirely prepared by the single artist.
Hobbyist (Joint Artist) – Someone who pursues quilting as a hobby. The Hobbyist may have won up to 3 ribbons, not counting a Best of Show. If the artist has won a best of show, you are considered part of the Champion Class. This top is prepared by the submitting artist(s) and was quilted by one of the top makers, or someone else.
