Utah Quilt Guild Quilt Show Rules
**You must be a member of the Utah Quilt Guild to enter a quilt**
A quilt is defined as having three distinct layers - a top, middle, and backing. Quilting stitches must penetrate all three layers and be visible on the back. Quilt edge must be finished with some sort of binding or facing.
This year there will be ten classes for the adult portion of the competition. We will also have the Group (3 or more people) and Youth (18 years and younger) classes.
There are no separate categories for pieced, modern, applique, etc. All quilts in a class will be judged against the other quilts in that same class and ribbons will be awarded in proportion to the number of entries in the class. The classes are:
Freshman - To encourage - Quilters (Solo and Joint) entering a quilt show for the 1st time
Sophomore - To promote - Quilters (Solo and Joint) having entered 3 or fewer quilt shows
Junior - To preserve - Quilters (Solo and Joint) having entered 4 or more quilt shows
Senior - To inspire - Quilters (Solo and Joint) having won a Blue Ribbon in a major quilt show competition
Master - To inspire - Quilters (Solo and Joint) having won Best of Category or Best of Show ribbons in a major quilt show competition
Ribbons and monetary prizes to be awarded:
Best of Show: Quilt judges deem as Best of Show
Jean Christensen Founders Award for Hand Quilting: Quilt judges deem as best hand quilting
Best of Category: Quilt judges deem as Best in Solo and Joint classes above
Patsy Shelton Award: Quilt selected by family/friends of Patsy that best reflects Patsy's love of purple, flowers, and embellishments. This award may be selected from Display Only quilts as well as competition quilts.
Viewer's Choice: Quilt that has the most votes from the quilt show attendees
In addition to the awards above, Ribbon only awards will be presented for the following categories:
Judge's Choice: Personal favorite of each Quilt Show judge. Each judge will select one quilt
National Teacher's Choice: Personal favorite of the National Teacher. Each National Teacher selects one quilt.
Award of Excellence: Awarded to Honorable Mention quilts in each class, in proportion to the number of quilts entered in each Class
Group Quilt: Quilts constructed by three or more people
Youth Quilt: Quilts constructed by youth under 18 years of age. Quilt may be quilted by someone other that the quilt top maker.
Quilts must have been completed in the last three years and be clean.
No tied or Tricot quilts will be accepted for judging. They can be submitted in the Display Only category.
Please give credit where credit is due. You will be asked to provide your design source (pattern, workshop, kit, or original design, for example.) All persons involved in the making of the quilt must be listed in the appropriate sections of the registration form, including who constructed the quilt and who quilted the quilt. A group of three or more quilters involved in the making of the quilt should be registered in the Group Class, including the top makers and the quilter(s).
Entries without four inch sleeves will not be displayed. If the quilt is submitted without a sleeve, the entry fee will be forfeited.
Please note, it is up to the individual to insure their quilts, the Utah Quilt Guild Quilt Show does not insure the quilts.
Place each entry in a separate disposable bag (preferably clear plastic). Your name and the name of the quilt must be identified on the bag. Stapled paper copy of the entry form is allowed.
Each quilt must have a fabric label on the back of the quilt, stating (at a minimum) your name and the title of the quilt.
Each quilt must have its own entry form.
Only the person(s) designated to pick up the quilt on the entry form will be allowed to pick up the quilt after the show closes on Saturday, October 11, 2025. Pick up will begin at approximately 4:00 p.m. For security purposes, only the assigned quilt show volunteers will take down the quilts and distribute them.
Entry Paperwork: All entry paperwork and a photograph of the quilt must reach the Quilt Show Coordinators by midnight, August 31, 2025. The easiest way to enter will be online at www.utahquiltguild.org. A picture of your quilt will need to be uploaded. Please have it ready when you begin the entry process. Texted or emailed photos of the quilts can also be accepted. Please text those photos to Debbie at 801-971-2404 or Virginia at 801-259-0563. Or emailed to Debbie at debbiebreivik@gmail.com. Please include your name if you are emailing or texting the photo.
Entry Drop Off Instructions: Quilts may be dropped off at designated locations (quilt shops and individuals) between September 8-12, 2025. Please call individuals to make sure they are home. Drop off locations will be listed in the July and August Beeline Newsletters. Please ask for a receipt of quilt drop off, if one is not offered. Quilts may be dropped off Debbie Breivik's or Virginia Lee's home between September 13-20, 2025. No quilts will be accepted for drop off on Monday, October 6, 2025
Judging: Monday, October 6, 2025
Awards Presentation: The awards will be presented on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 at dinner. The quilt show will open Wednesday, October 8, 2025. Viewer's Choice will be awarded at the luncheon, Saturday, October 11, 2025.
Entry Pick Up: The quilt show will end at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 11, 2025. You may pick up your quilt(s) after approximately 4:00 p.m. Please have identification or your entry form to prove quilt ownership.
