251 - Orphan Block Night - with Patti and Maja
251 - Orphan Block Night - with Patti and Maja

As you save your orphan blocks to be sewn into a family of beautiful quilts, I hope you'll also think of us if you have batting that may need a new home also. The quilt tops completed at Quilt Fest will need to be quilted which requires batting and backing, a little larger expense than just an orphan block or two. If you have it in your heart, we'd really appreciate batting also. Our largest quilts are often twin size, so twin or lap sizes would be greatly appreciated.

Please join us for fun, candy and prizes at Orphan Block night. We have a huge collection of orphan blocks and fabric, much of which is being pre-assembled into kits. You will be greeted with a large selection of orphan block kits, yardage and individual orphan blocks to pick from. Work in teams or on your own to come up with fun on-the-fly designs using previously-made, abandoned fabrics. Donate your quilts to charity, keep them or present them to a loved one when completed. Don't miss a super fun, exhilarating night of designing and sewing!

323 – Easy Kawandi Style Quilting – Tammy Gunther
323 – Easy Kawandi Style Quilting – Tammy Gunther

Description: Kawandi-style is a way to use easy big hand-stitches to create beautiful mats, runners and even quilts using nothing but scraps. The sewing method is used in India by the Siddi people who originated in Africa. It is being recognized as an art form because of its colorful designs and unique way of sewing improv strictly by hand. A great way to use up your favorite bits of fabric perhaps too small for a quilt, the method is satisfying and very personal depending on each person’s choice of colors. Emphasis on meditative stitching rather than perfect lines, it is a way to enjoy the process and not fixate on exactness, unlike other forms of quilting.

It’s easy to make and distinctive when using that favorite fabric you’ve been saving. While making this functional bag we will practice topstitching and “stitching in the ditch”. We will use four different types of stabilizers (byAnnie’s Soft n Stable; Pellon Shape-Flex, Fusible Thermolam, and Pel-Tex) and learn how to work with each of them. We will master snap-in-place grommets and learn to sew with cork fabric (if you choose). There is no hand stitching involved in this one. The outside panel is quilted. This can be simply done with straight lines on a domestic machine; with a complicated pattern on a long arm; or anywhere in between. If you come prepared with the outside panel quilted and some basic cutting done, you may be able to finish the bag in class.

351 - Charity Sew with Wrap the World In Quilts
351 - Charity Sew with Wrap the World In Quilts

We care about… the power of creativity… the goodness and generosity of quilters… the importance of being seen, understood and valued… the power of invitation… caring for one… gratitude.

Wrap the World with Quilts was founded by Gina and Hal Halladay and Beth Hawkins and our unity around these important values was the foundation for the quick action we took to do something – however small – to help Ukrainian refugees when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

While we have business experience in quilting and beyond, it was simply our commitment to help Nataliya and her family and friends that launched Wrap the World with Quilts. We knew so little about humanitarian aid but we cared about those who were displaced and suffering. And we knew quilters were givers. That was enough to get started and continues to sustain and guide us and to attract great people to our cause.

Come join us for an evening of sewing and laughing and giving to help others!

411 – Improvisational Thread Painting – Tamara Tanner
411 – Improvisational Thread Painting – Tamara Tanner

Description: During the past couple of years, I have been exploring my creativity through my non-dominant hand. I love to draw repetitive patterns both to gain better control of my hand and as a form of meditation. As I repeat ideas that I enjoy drawing, I ask myself, what new thing could I do with it? In this class I want to spark your imagination through repetition. What can you do with a line and some thread? How about a curve? In this class each student will have the opportunity to create their own thread art mug rug (or two or three!). You will learn the basics of thread painting and improvisation. Don't think you are creative enough to improvise? You are because you are human! Beautiful art is created by using lines and curves and putting them together in interesting ways. I will teach you how to explore different basic shapes and how to use them repetitively to create interesting patterns. I will provide a structure but will also give you space to improvise and make it your own. No need to fear putting those first stitches in. There are no such things as mistakes. When you stitch something that didn’t turn out the way you intended, it is an opportunity to explore a new direction, which could end up being way better than your original idea! If you ever wanted to create art with your sewing machine or just want to improve your free motion quilting skills, this class is for you. Once you learn the basics, there is no end to what you can do! Basic sewing skills are required.
